The current events unfolding in Cairo offer a window into failed policy, foreign and domestic for both Egypt and the United States. What we are witnessing is a breakdown of totalitarian rule maintained under the façade of Democracy (big ‘D’). It is the same façade we applied to Iraq to give legitimacy to the continued rule of Saddam Hussein as he stamped out any semblance of real freedom across the nation. Indeed, it seems to be the favored talking point of all those “in the know” regarding world politics.

This point is further illustrated as we tune into the talking heads, both media and government, attempting to apply American standards of governance to a fully independent and sovereign nation. We hear these talking heads speak of “Universal Human Rights” and applying wholly American principles of rights and justice to a nation that has not enshrined those principles in its founding documents. From the highest levels of our own government we appear to be dictating terms we have no right to dictate.

“We want to see an orderly transition so that no one fills a void, that there not be a void, that there be a well thought-out plan that will bring about a democratic, participatory government,….I also believe strongly that this is in Egypt’s long-term interest, it is in the interest of the partnership that the United States has with Egypt so that is what we are attempting to promote and support.”  Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton Jan 30, 2011 FoxNews.com

First, when did we gain the right to dictate anything to the Egyptian people? A billion or two in yearly aid hardly qualifies as a vested interest in that nation. Second, shouldn’t we get a clearer understanding of what is meant by Democracy (big ‘D’) before we dictate to others? We have a serious misunderstanding of the term in this nation. The media elites and power elites in government continue to misapply the term at home. In reality a true Democracy (big ‘D’) is mob rule. Look around the globe and you will find a plethora of examples of “Democracies” in action. Look closer and you will see what lies underneath is either a totalitarian state or a socialist state, neither presenting true freedom to its citizens.

We are in desperate need of self-evaluation in the United States.  A careful examination of OUR founding documents shows the formation of a Republic (big ‘R’) that conducts portions of its official function from democratic (little ‘d’) methods. When we understand the true nature of the American Experiment, that man can rule himself; we empower individuals and grow as a society.

This same potential for freedom is now before the Egyptian people. My humble advice to them is to look at our founding documents. Understand your rights do not come from government. What government issues it can take away. Understand there are those in your society that will attempt to co-opt your thirst for freedom only to enslave you under their thumbs. You have a choice before you; continued socialism and faux Democratic rule or true freedom that can only be achieved by enshrining individual rights as coming from God. Freedom is strengthened when Government is constrained. Now is your moment in history. Consider carefully for it is your children that will suffer the benefits or consequences of your choice.
